REVIEW

INTRODUCTION

"Float like a butterfly, sting like a bee!" The famous words Ali once spoke still run through my head every time I play it. This game when I first played it I really hated it(thats how it is with a lot of 3DO games) but the more and more I played it the better and better it got. One great thing about this game is that it stars the great 3-time heavy champion of the world Muhamid Ali formerly Cassius Clay. That's another great thing about this game.... There are three games to choose from, exbedition, where you can fight as anyone anywhere; Tournament where you can pick what boxers you want to be and give the computer boxers, or you and a friend or friends can each pick a boxer. The best option though is the history game. In history you can fight in some of the greatest Ali fights or you can go in any order. Also another thing that is cool is before each match you can hear a little history about that match and get information on the boxer you fight against. You can play against the computer or with a friend. The great thing about this game is the historical accuracy! The only bad thing is that you can only fight as Ali where as in the other games you could choose anyone. A few worthy small options that are great is the blood which you can toggle from none to normal to gallons, how much the crowd yells at you and the different views. By the way, my God the views there must be about 25 of um!

GRAPHICS-7/10
The graphics of the actual boxers are done fairly well for the 3DO but average when compared to the PS. The blood and sweat that pours off you or your opponent is really cool(its awesome when the canvas is just completely speckeled with blood!) The view I like best is the one it is set on from the beginning, sure the others are cool like when you see from your own perspective, but things get a little to bunched and polygons begin to look horrid. The crowd is simply horrible. I can't see one face out there and nothing but little specks. Another cool thing is when you just keep beating the crap out of your opponent in a certain spot and making it swell and bleed. The ring is well done although if you get a knockdown by the ropes the ring looks kind of goofy. Overall the graphics are pretty good but the crowd could be much better. I tend to use the code that takes the crowd out just because I hate looking at them so much. Then all you see are a bunch of camera flashes from darkness!

SOUNDS-7/10
The music at the beginning of the game and after fights is great. The bell is clear as a bell. The punches all sound almost exactly alike which is a bit of a drawback. The crowd is what makes it. The yelling of what appears to be a drunk man, the howl of the crowd when Ali is on a roll, and the boo of the crowd when you punch the guy in the balls. Ah yes the crowd is whats great. If you use the TV view then you get to hear a little commentary but it is pretty weak. They say the same thing over and over, with only about 5 dif things to say. I was quite disappointed. But the sound and music of the game are good.

CONTROL-8/10
The control when I first played this game I thought sucked but the more I played it the better I liked it. The control really grows on you and sucks you in. So much that your thumbs will be writheing in pain. I know mine was today, it was numb for about two hours from last nights brutal beating with Ali going 17-0. There aren't very many moves I know for the game, but the ones I do know I use constantly. There is no strat guide as far as I can tell, if you can get me it I'll put you on the credits page. I would just love to know some more moves since I only know about 3 combo's. Combo's are simple to pull off. They wont be at first but the button motion will come naturally to you after a while. The one draw back is that you can't really move that fast and also it is hard to time punches against certain people.

GAMEPLAY-7/10
This game is really good when it comes to gameplay as long as you win. This game can get quite tiring if you dont win. I reccommend putting it on easy for about your first 20 or 30 fights otherwise it is hell. Also sometimes you have to use tactics such as hit to the body then head which hurt your fingers, your opponent, and your patience when your opponent won't go down. I am still trying to figure out how sometimes 3 or 4 punches can take away half your opponents life. How do you do this? It isn't very common to do this but sometimes my opponent will do it 3 times in a row which really pisses me off. Enough with the bad. This game does rock when you win. It is so fun watching blood fly from your opponent and relentlessly hitting him in the head 6 or 7 consecutive times. It is a blast. I don't like blocking though I just keep punching. One detail which is neat is that when your boxer begins to weaken his punches go slower and so does his movement. He also won't automatically block. Gameplay usually rocks for this game. Although sometimes it is frustrating.

OVERALL FINAL SCORE-8/10
A solid boxing game that teaches a history lesson. And its fun! If only school was like this! This game can be even more fun though if you grab a friend that is equally matched with you. It just makes it a lot more fun. This is a game though that takes an hour or two before you can begin to like it. It took me a good 2 hours before I started really enjoying it. Otherwise I was about to give this game a final of about 4. But if you do stick at it you will find one of the funnest, most interesting, most gory, and most historical boxing games for any system new or old!
