Gridders is a futuristic puzzle game where you have to pick upi gems which boxes leave behind.... sounds easy right... wrong! Sure this game is pretty easy the first few levels but after that it's very hard. Many of the latter levels will cause you to A: Go insane B: Destroy your 3DO C: Throw your controller at the screen or D: All of the above. Well what is gridders all about you ask? You are this regular ol' joe who has to pick up green gems from other crates. There are a variety of crates. Some kill you, some move with you, some just move back and forth not harming you, others stay still, and some cause the other boxes to switch directions. Most of the time you must push a crate into the crates which can kill you after the crate stops the gem falls down. Next move the box and let the deadly one pass pick the gem up and exit the level. You can also pick up a bone which gives you a virtual dog who can help you out. There is also different types of fruit to pick up. Some give you back health others take it away. Then there is this one little thing on screen which turns you upside down. Then there are also things which can steal your gems and others that fly around and try to kill you. Sound confusing? It is the first hour or two but after awhile you'll master it.
Definitely not up to 3DO standards! It has some pretty horrid graphics. FMV is cartoony and looks alright but as for the game well.... the SNES could do a lot better than this. Crates look bland and so does your guy and sometimes you can't even see him when you are behind a crate which doesn't happen often but hinders some gameplay. But hey puzzle games aren't all about flashy graphics right!
Control is very simple and easy to figure out. Let me summarize it for you. Basically you just use the directional pad to move around and push the crates, oh and you can zoom in and out.... see what I mean. But hey the game already is complicated enough so I figure they wanted to take it easy on you when it comes to the controls.
Background music is done fairly well but your character gets annoying. The constant "Digital!" and his other comments get annoying. But the background music is pretty good so it makes up for the repitious voices.
This game is very addictive and fun to play once you get good at it. The concept of collecting gems but Tetragon made it so that concept wasn't to simple and there was some variety. There are pretty many levels. Right now I am on level 18 or 19 I think and I am having pretty much fun. The game is fairly difficult though.
OVERALL FINAL SCORE-7/10
The game is great. Lots of levels, good level design, and challenging puzzles. Graphics do suck though. if you like great puzzle games that aren't just tetris clones then deffinitely check GRIDDERS out.
